Daniel and I played Roadblock last month.
Initially I wanted to play 1,500 pts, but Daniel would have none of that and wanted 1,750pts. I threw in 200pts of Sporadic Sturmies to bring my force up from 1,495 to 1,695. The night was getting late and I didn't want to bother with the other 55pts.
Here's my force:
229th Separate Tank Regiment
HQ Sherman
8x Shermans
8x Shermans
3x BA-10M's
2x SU-152's
Limited Sturmoviks
Daniel ran the tank Finn force.
By memory he had:
2x KV-1E's
4x T-28's
4x T-26's
1x Platoon of Pioneers
2x BT-42's
1x Platoon of mortars
2x Flak vehicles
I'm sure I am forgetting the rest of his force.
Onto the battle. Roadblock has the attacker select a platoon to ambush. Daniel pleaded and whined and finally I decided on the T-26's. The T-26 and T-28 had the same gun, so I went with the platoon with weaker armor to wipe them out.
The Shermans ambushed, while Daniel had the KV-1's escort the T-26's.
The Road
Non-Ambushing Sherman company finds a hill on the right flank.
Sherman ambush is waiting and licking its chops while Daniel sets up.
Underwhelming results - 2 dead T-26's and 2 bailed T-26's.
Daniel's annoying Landsverk Anti II flank units. They shot down all my Sturmis whenever then showed up. Pioneers move into the forest in front of the second company
Second company of Shermans move up. I maneuvered this unit horribly in the game, fearful of Daniel's pioneers. His pioneers negated a 525pt unit of 8 Shermans. Bad tactics on my part.
Ambushing company finishes off the T-26's.
They then take care of Daniel's BA-10's who were leading the column.
Sturmis summoned to attack KV-1's. They get shot down. Sad Face
SU-152's lumber into overwatch position. BA-64's of mine proxying as BA-10's. I've since bought 3 Old Glory BA-10's. They are primered and base coated.
Ambushing Shermans double past the open road and behind the hill. They are positioned to receive the reserves from Daniel or the KV-1's over the hill.
Pioneers now firmly in the woods.
The T-28's arrive from reserve.
Daniel's mortars kill the HQ and a Sherman from Company 2.
KV's moving slowly up the road and making armor saves against the SU-152's. I hit those KV's three times during the game, needing 5's, with my SU's and Daniel made all saves.
Daniel applies the Flaming Cotton of Shame to the T-28's.
The T-28's didn't last long. I believe they bailed a couple of Shermans with side shots before dying.
BA-64's aka BA-10's race past the smoking wreckage.
The KV's crest the hill!! They blow up a Sherman
Company 2 moves into the Village to swing wide past the pioneers.
Shermans blow up a KV!
Finn pioneers try to catch the Shermans at 10". I'm measuring the whole time to keep at 10.1".
It's a knife fight at close range. KV contesting objective to keep game going.
Darn, the pioneers catch the Shermans! The assault phase is ugly.
And gets uglier....
Last KV dies.
Daniel rains mortar and BT-42 direct fire on the Ambushing Company and desperately wants to kill the Company in the Village. His only chance of winning is to force a company check, which I'd auto-fail with the HQ dead.
The Company commander breaks off assault and high-tails it away from the pioneers. They give chase, but are just out of assault range. Game over. 6-1 to the 229th.
The Ambushing Company was down to 4 tanks. The Village Company had 1 tank left. Daniel almost pulled out a win in a very tough mission for his force. Shermans in MW are very tough and he didn't have many AT assets.
Unit of the match is the ambushing company, which destroyed most of Daniel's armor. The SU-152's did their job on overwatch, even though didn't kill anything. The BA-10's are a very nice unit. I drove them right past the KV's at one point because I knew Daniel still be shooting at the Shermans. I didn't get a picture of that unfortunately.
I really played the second company horribly and they were a non-factor. I've learned the hard way that Conscript tanks suck in assaulting. This was on my mind whenever I moved the tanks. Next time I'll camp out in front of the forest and dare the pioneers to come out. At least then MG dice has a chance to gun them down. Or maybe I'll double them to the other side of the board.
Thanks for the game, Daniel!!
Awesome amount of armour on that table!
